Ocean’s Journey with The Momentum Centre

A Transformative Impact

The Momentum Centre has long been a place of growth, and transformation for many individuals. Ocean Bruyere, a past participant, employee, and Board member of the organization, is a testament to the Momentum Centre’s profound impact. Now working as an action therapist and Indigenous Ways of Life teacher, as well as a mother and model, Ocean recently competed in the first-ever Miss Indigenous Canada pageant. Her journey is one of resilience, self-discovery, and professional development—fueled in part by her experiences at the Momentum Centre.

Building Community and Professional Growth

Ocean’s work with CHOICE, a program affiliated with the Momentum Centre, provided her with valuable community support experience. Initially placed at the Thunderbird House as an event planner and administrative assistant, she spent months gaining practical experience before transitioning to the Native Women’s Transition Centre. These roles allowed her to develop essential life and professional skills, from managing responsibilities to understanding the importance of self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

A Safe Space for Learning and Growth

One of the most profound aspects of Ocean’s experience at the Momentum Centre was the feeling of safety and support she found there. She describes her time in the program as one of the first moments in her life when she felt truly safe—safe enough to share personal experiences and challenges, knowing she was supported by both staff and peers. This culture of mutual support helped her, and others grow, creating a sense of community among participants from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

Lessons That Last a Lifetime

Reflecting on her six months in the program, Ocean emphasizes the depth of learning she experienced. She describes gaining more knowledge and skills during her time at the Momentum Centre than in several years of high school. The lessons learned—whether in personal development, emotional resilience, or professional skills—are essential, equipping participants with tools that extend far beyond the program itself.

The Momentum Centre’s approach goes beyond traditional training; it embraces a holistic model that meets participants where they are, walks with them on their journey, and ensures that they feel seen, heard, and supported. Ocean’s story is just one example of the life-changing impact that TMC continues to have on its participants, helping them build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
